board of directors

Advantage Tampa Bay's Board of Directors meets once a month to direct the league's administration, events and programs. Board members are elected every February and serve one-year terms. Any currently-registered member who is interested in serving a term is encouraged to apply during the nomination period starting January 1st of each year.

A native of Lakeland, Chris has lived in Atlanta, Ft Lauderdale, Miami, San Francisco, and Seattle, but now makes his home in the Palma Ceia neighborhood of South Tampa. He holds licensures in General Contracting and Real Estate Sales. He hopes to one day have attended all four Grand Slam tennis championships.

Daniel hails from Lakeland and is a graduate of the University of Florida. He is an educator with Hillsborough County Public Schools and an adjunct professor at the University of Tampa. When he's not on the tennis court, you can find him at the happiest place on earth: Disney World!

DIANA ZARREKE, Women's Director

A physical therapist and mother of two young men, DIana was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She is a long-time ATB member and has served several terms as the league's Women's Director. She enjoys anything outdoors, including boating, fishing, gardening, and most of all, tennis!

JOE GILBERT, Tournament Director

A Nashville native, Joe lived in Atlanta for 8 years before moving to Florida in 2006 for his work with Morgan Stanley. He lives in Seminole Heights with his partner, fellow ATB member Christopher Hethcox, and 2 dogs, Jess and Cooper.  Joe was a high school and college basketball official and is an avid softball player.

MARK AKCHIN, Secretary/Scribe

Mark is a transplant from Baton Rouge. He has been a Realtor for nearly 15 years, but also has a background in Education and Human Resources. In addition to tennis--which he has played off and on since he was 8 years old--he enjoys theater, music, most sports, and, most of all, making people laugh.

NEAL MOBLEY, Team Tennis Director

A member of the league since 2006, Neal has served on the ATB Board since 2007. He grew up in Atlanta and Winston-Salem, and enjoys biking, hiking, birding, painting (not well), and book clubs (when he gets to pick the books). Neal and his husband, Xavier, live in Seminole Heights.

JONATHAN SOOTS, Membership Director

Originally from Lenoir, North Carolina, Jonathan began playing tennis at the age of ten. In college he trained with former women's tour player Kay McDaniel. He works fulltime at United HealthCare and part-time as a church youth coordinator. He enjoys the outdoors, entertainment, travel, and food and wine.

HENRI PICHAL, FLEX League/Ladder Director

Henri moved back to his native Tampa, Florida after graduating from the University of Texas. He works locally as an HR Manager for a government defense contractor. When not on the court, Henri enjoys hitting the beach and dining out.

JAN MOENNIG, Social Director

Originally from the Midwest, Jan is a Doctor of Optometry whose interests include boating, jogging, fishing and working out at the gym. Her philanthropic work involves treating eye disease and providing low-income children access to eyeglasses.

Due to one member's conflicting work schedule, a Board position has recently become open, and we want you to consider helping us direct the league! As the Director of Team Tennis, you will be in charge of managing all aspects of our team tennis program: recruiting players, managing rosters, maintaining standings/results, assisting team captains, and helping to arrange for substitutes. Of course you won't have to do all this yourself: you'll have the full support of the other members of the Board, including one former Team Tennis Director. This is a mid-term appointment to serve out the remainder of the 2015-16 Board Year, which ends in February.

To qualify, you must be a registered, current ATB member and be available to attend monthly Board meetings as well as Thursday night matches during the fall and spring seasons (roughly September-November and February-April). Players of any level are encouraged to apply!

With the fall season starting up in less than two months we would like to have the new Director in place for the August 11th Board meeting so we can start planning! If you are at all interested, please don't hesitate to contact league chairman Chris Goldsmith by email at or by phone/text at 813-390-9376.

The Advantage Tampa Bay Board welcomes Jonathan Soots as the league's Social Director for the 2015-2016 Board Year. In his application to the Board, Jonathan laid out a vision of expanding participation by hosting a variety of social events and activities both in our traditional hub ofTampa and in other areas in the metro, particularly in St Petersburg.

Please join us in welcoming our newest board member, and check out the May Social Events section of this newsletter to learn about some upcoming activities that Jonathan already has in the works!
